I've long wanted to make one of my dream guitars a reality. However, as reality often interferes with our dreams, I find myself lacking the combination of time and money to make it myself, despite a few successful rebuilds and other guitar projects.
After much research and debate I decided to go ahead and have the guitar of my dreams made overseas. It is a cross between a Les Paul and a Flying V. I was torn between several Chinese manufacturers available on Aliexpress.com but I finally decided on The Dylans Shop due to the combination of reputation and price.
Here is what I ordered (after numerous messages):
--the text below was used to place my order--
Mahogany body 2 or 3 piece okay
Carved maple top like a Les Paul style guitar.
Body shape: Les Paul style upper, Flying V style lower.
Mahogany neck
24 3/4" scale length; 1 11/16" nut width
Ebony fretboard with block inlays
Binding white Multi-ply on body,
Binding single-ply on neck
Multi-ply pickguard
Straight neck set
Low profile frets (no fret buzz)
Kluson style tuners in gold color that keep the guitar in tune and are tight fitting.
Neck with Tak Matsumoto profile
2 gold humbucker style pickups (wax potted)
Les Paul style controls: 2 volume, 1 tone, 3-way switch
Bridge abr-1 gold with stop bar tailpiece
Guitar Nut bone material
Logo mother of pearl
Inlay mother of pearl with custom shape instead of split diamond
Ebony finish
In previous messages I requested my name on the headstock in gibby style script along with a custom image instead of the split diamond logo (I attached an image file of what I want).
I was quoted a price and sent a payment link.
A day after payment was made I was sent a confirmation email that my guitar was "shipped." So the clock is ticking. I learned from other custom customers that the build process takes a significant amount of time. I have read that an extension on the buyer protection may be likely as the typical finish time of a total custom is close to 6 weeks.
Fingers crossed!
